Britain risks sliding into global irrelevance on artificial intelligence (AI) if the Government does not introduce new laws to regulate the sector.
Although the recent Safety Summit and Safety Institute are welcome initiatives, AI is already impacting and it is just as urgent that we legislate to mitigate the existing harms and ensure the opportunities benefit citizens and society alike.
This is why I introduced my Artificial Intelligence (Regulation) Bill to Parliament. The Bill received wide support and had completed all its Lords stages before being interrupted by the General Election.
I will be entering a similar Bill to the ballot after the Kings Speech on 17th July and whatever legislation is introduced by whichever Government I will explain why I proposed each element of my Bill.
We need principles based, outcomes focused legislation, increased regulatory capability, an end to copyright abuses and public engagement. We need leadership and ethical AI for all our AI futures.
